My Why

Hunting has long been a topic of heated debate, with opinions often divided sharply between those who see it as a time-honored tradition and those who view it as an unethical practice. Yes, I am a hunter! It probably seems really odd to come to my girly looking page about homemaking, homeschooling, sourdough and pretty flowers in my vegetable garden then alongside it see a picture of me decked out in camo with a moose I took with my recurve bow. Although there is a recent rise in interest, there are very few of us women who hunt, and really love it too.

When I first met my husband in the late summer of 2011 he was preparing for their family’s annual archery elk hunt. I quickly realized this wasn’t just a once a year hobby for him, but rather a lifestyle and if I was going to be with this man (which I already knew in my heart he was the one … I know you’re probably rolling your eyes haha) then I knew I needed to learn about hunting and even participate myself. Let me put a disclaimer in now that it was not a requirement for our relationship from my soon to be husband.

So Why in the world am I a hunter?

The thrill of the hunt

Let me give you a little more background. I played competitive softball for most all of my childhood and went on to play at the D1 BigTen level in college. I have a very motivated and rather competitive nature in me that LOVES a challenge. And hunting, let alone with a recurve bow mind you, is a challenge; mentally, emotionally, and physically. Hunting is right up my alley. The thrill of the chase is like nothing else.  The few times that I have been blessed with a successful hunt have been absolutely exhilarating. But not every hunt is successful, in fact more often than not I have an unfilled tag at the end of the season burning a hole in my pocket and fueling the drive for the next hunt. While I may be disappointed for that season, the memories I made with my husband or family are some of my most cherished.

Growing closer to God

Today, in our fast paced world where everyone seems to be living through a screen, it is refreshing to escape into and immerse myself in nothing but the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. It’s a way for me to feel closer to God too. As I step outside into the vast expanse of the natural world, I’m enveloped by a profound sense of peace and connection. The sun filters through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground, while a gentle breeze dances through the trees. In these moments, I find solace and spirituality, often feeling a palpable presence that can only be God.

The purest food

How many people can say they know exactly where their food came from. Especially their protein. And to go deeper still, how many know how that animal lived, what was their main diet and how did they die? Most people today don’t even put much thought into knowing where their food comes from. They get it from their local grocery store and that is that, end of story. We have become so disconnected.  Well I can say without a doubt, I DO know! In recent years, a growing chorus of voices has emerged, revealing the unsettling truth about the state of our food supply. As consumers become increasingly aware of the chemicals that permeate our food, the over-processing of ingredients, and their potential effects on health, the demand for organic produce and products is surging. Wild game is the purest form of protein on the planet. Why wouldn’t I choose to feed my family the best possible option?

Hunting is a multifaceted experience that encompasses joy, spirituality, and sustenance. Through it, I embrace the mountains, tune into the rhythm of nature, and revel in the thrill of the chase. It is a passion that nourishes not just my body, but my spirit, bringing me closer to God and fostering a deeper appreciation for the world around me. As I continue my journey in the wild, I remain committed to upholding the values of respect, stewardship, and gratitude that make each hunt a deeply enriching experience. In a world that often distracts from the beauty of nature, hunting offers a pathway back to simplicity and reverence—a true celebration of life.
